Increase Your Vocal D-E-P-T-H

D—Be Direct: Have a point and get to the point. Think things through and speak in a definite manner—one that shows that you know what your point of view is, you know what you want to say, and you know the end result you are looking for. Tell it like it is. Be clear, concise, and don’t beat around the bush.

E—Be Engaging: Really be present and in the moment when you speak with another person. Make it your goal to be understood and to understand. Make it your goal to connect with the person you are speaking with, build rapport, and find common ground.

P—Control Your Pitch: Be conscious of the pitch of your voice; seek to speak in a deeper, pleasant pitch free of whiny, shrieking tones.

T—Adjust Your Tempo: Speed is an indicator of nerves. Fast talkers are perceived as being nervous or trying to get something over on someone. Some people don’t seem to come up for air. We can’t digest what they are saying. Think of your voice as a musical instrument. A frantic tempo sets a very definite tone, as does an easy-going tempo.

H—Be Human: Seek to speak in an accessible, real, conversational manner.
